Today is a day that we gather with our families to honor our loved ones that no longer walk amongst us. From the moment that our loved ones leave this earth we mourn and we miss them but today is more than that.
Today we not only miss them, we remember them, we celebrate them and we connect with them. For we believe that on November 1st & 2nd, our dead come to visit us and we prepare ourselves for their visit. We build an altar for their arrival with their pictures, their favorite foods + drinks and the elements.
We also adorn it with Cempasuchil flowers to guide our loved ones home and add oil of copal to ensure safety on their journey. On this day, we celebrate and we honor those that are no longer here with us but we believe that they never truly die, because death only exists when you are forgotten. And for us, our dead live through all of us who love them, who remember them and who continue to walk with them in all that we do.
“Between flowers, colors and flavors we remember those who are no longer here, but between laughter, dance and song we know that they are never truly gone”.
Chocolate:
Boil a gallon of milk with an Abuelita chocolate bar. When the milk is boiling and the chocolate bar is soft, beat your milk with a grinder. Beat until the milk and chocolate are mixed and your chocolate is foamy.
Put it on your altar with your bread of the dead.
You may find the ingredients in our market or at a Hispanic supermarket in your area.
